BAIRNSDALE
Bairnsdale is located 285 km east of Melbourne. Set on the banks of the Mitchell River, Bairnsdale is a thriving Provincial town, once home to steam boats & traders. Today, you can experience history, art, culture and retail therapy all combined in this busy commercial hub.
The town has thrived since 1850 when gold was found in its outlying areas. Glimpses of the past can be spotted all about. Stroll along the Heritage Walk and view historic highlights like the Rotunda, St. Mary’s Church and the Courthouse, noted for its 19th century architecture. Start a bike ride from Bairnsdale East Gippsland on the popular East Gippsland Rail Trail, or begin your touring journey on the Great Alpine Road, but don’t leave too quickly.
Stay and Shop in a vast variety of businesses and meet friendly shopkeepers and locals, who are happy to chat about our beautiful region.
