The gateway to East Gippsland

History, Arts and Culture of the traditional land owners, Gunai Kurnai shine bright in this now bustling commercial town. The town sits along a peaceful riverbank, nestled between the famous Gippsland Lakes and rivers. Close to the High Country mountains and within a stones throw of bountiful National Parks, Bairnsdale welcomes you. 

Wander the shops and gardens of Main Street and soak up our cafe-rich culture with a stop at one of the many cafes and restaurants dotted around. Standing tall, St Mary’s Church is an icon of Bairnsdale adorned with impressive murals painted by Italian artist, Francesco Floreani. Creativity keeps flowing as the East Gippsland Art Gallery displays a finesse of arts and the Krowathunkoolong Keeping Place museum displays traditional artworks along with strong Indigenous history.  

Another vibrant part of town is at the eastern end. Here you will find our All abilities playground and skate park and Howitt Park reserve (The big yellow slide lives here) and BMX track. A very popular place to enjoy a break and let the kids have some fun on the many elements of play. Ensure you take a look at the mighty canoe tree situated within the Howitt Park reserve, this tree holds significant indigenous history and is a stop along the Bataluk Cultural Trail.
