One of the most notable touring routes in Australia, the Great Alpine Road offers incredibly scenery and high country hospitality in the towns of Omeo, Benambra, Swifts Creek, Ensay and Bruthen. The road peaks at 1825 metres, making it the highest year-round accessible bitumen road in Australia. Whether it is skiing and snowboarding in winter or fly-fishing in fresh mountain streams, East Gippsland’s high country has it all. Go mountain biking through alpine trails or take a wildflower walk. The region is rich in pioneering history. Explore historic gold-mining landmarks such as the Log Gaol and old Court House at Omeo or visit the Oriental Claims, once one of the largest gold-sluicing operations in the world. Take a short walk around the area to discover mining relics, caves and other historical sites. Also in the region is the 3600-hectare Cassilis historic area. Once a thriving mining town, it contains gold-mining relics and a lonely cemetery.
