Mitchell River

Flowing along spectacular gorges through the Mitchell River National Park, the river proceeds southerly into the floodplains, known as the Mitchell River flats. Due to the sediment, the land here is very fertile and makes for some of the best vegetable growing conditions in the country. This local produce is highly sought after by chefs nationally, and our local cafes and restaurants showcase it brilliantly. 

The mighty Mitchell meanders right by the commercial hub of Bairnsdale, the gateway to East Gippsland. Once a thriving port for freight, the port is now an idyllic spot to cast a line or enjoy a leisurely ride along the Mitchell River loop. Flowing further downstream, where the river meets Lake King you will find 8km of natural occurring silt jetties - the largest in the world.
